The International Free Expression Project presents, in partnership with Point Park University’s Center for Media Innovation, a conversation with former Washington Post executive editor Marty Baron, whose new book, “Collision of Power: Trump, Bezos and The Washington Post,” has been called “All the President's Men for a new generation.”
In “Collision of Power,” Marty tells the inside story of running The Washington Post newsroom as Jeff Bezos buys it and Donald Trump attacks it — relentlessly. Also during Marty’s tumultuous tenure at the Post, columnist Jamal Khashoggi was assassinated by the Saudi government, reporter Jason Rezaian was imprisoned in Iran, the Post broke the story of Edward Snowden’s massive leak of classified information, the Capitol was invaded during the Jan. 6 insurrection, and journalism was upended on every front by the digital revolution.
Martin Baron, a member of IFEP’s advisory board, is one the most celebrated journalists of our time. Under his leadership, The Washington Post, Boston Globe and Miami Herald have been awarded a total of 18 Pulitzer Prizes. One was for the Boston Globe’s exposure of the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church, which was the subject of the Oscar-winning movie “Spotlight.” Marty was played by Liev Schreiber, who also narrates the audio version of “Collision of Power.”
Our Sept. 14th conversation with Marty will feature Next Pittsburgh columnist Tony Norman, board chair of the International Free Expression Project; New York Times Magazine contributing writer Maggie Jones, a member of IFEP’s board; Dr. Andrew Conte, director of Point Park University’s Center for Media Innovation; and a Q&A with the audience. The Center for Media Innovation is IFEP’s partner in hosting Marty Baron, whose appearance kicks off the center's Sept. 26-28 celebration of journalism: Newsapalooza!
