Vanessa German

Considering herself a “citizen artist,” Vanessa German is a nationally-renowned poet, performer, sculptor, and photographer. Her mixed-media assemblages combine doll parts, cowrie shells, household objects, along with immaterial materials such as tears. These doll-faced sculptures  reclaim objects connected to Black subjugation and echo folk art traditions or, perhaps, religious icons.
